Area variation controls differences in patch size. Shape variation lets the layout wander from compact blocks toward longer rectangles. The canvas always stays completely filled.
Dimensions use your own units. Exported patch sizes are finished dimensions; add the seam and hem allowances required by your sewing method. The fabric preview is an illustration, not a prediction of real cloth or light.
